What to do if your Cricut Joy Cards are Cutting too High

This isn't my usual "look what I made!" blog post... but I'm sharing it as I experienced this problem and I couldn't find anything online about it!

When I first got my Cricut Joy, I also got some Insert Cards and a Card Mat.  However, when attempting to make a card, I found that the whole design wasn't cutting centrally on the mat, it was cutting too high, and therefore the corner slits were cutting off the card!  One, this didn't look right; and two, it didn't function correctly - the top slits were unable to hold the insert rectangle of card.  You can see two examples below...

You can also see on the Card Mat below, which still has the leftovers from the 'Thanks' card, that it is too high on the mat, and the top of the corner slits are being cut into the mat rather than the card...

After searching high and low on the internet for some kind of solution to my problem - what was I doing wrong?! - I called the Cricut helpdesk.  They were so helpful, and after us trying a few different things while on the phone, it turned out...

...the Card Mat was faulty!!

This is something I didn't even consider!  The border at the top of the Card Mat was actually too big, so when the card was positioned correctly on the mat, it was actually lower than the Cricut Joy machine expected it to be.  The machine cut as it should, but because the card was lower down, it was cutting the design too high, and off the top of the card.

The Cricut helpdesk arranged for a new mat to be sent to me, and all was well with the world!

You can see the difference in the top border sizes below... the correct one is on top.

The new mat made all the difference, and I could now make the cards correctly!

I hope this helps anyone who experiences the same problem - as there must be a load of these faulty card mats out there!

    1. Sorry for the late reply - I missed this! The top bit measured 2.9cm on the faulty one. (It was 2.5cm or 1 inch on the correct one).

    1. The good mat measures 2.5cm or 1 inch at the top. The bad mat measured 2.9cm and those extra 4mm made all the difference!

    1. I had this the other day, everything seemed fine in design studio but it was cutting the design too small for the selected card. I tried the same design in the Joy mobile app and it worked perfectly. Hopefully just a glitch.

  7. I just purchased the new 4 card mat for the Maker series and am having the exact same issue. I would think this wouldn't be an issue any more! Thanks for flagging this, since I couldn't find anything either.

  8. I don't have the same issue when I use the desktop. But if I use the Cricut App or Joy App it messes up the cards.

  9. I have the same problem, 2 card mats each ‘good’ with a 2.5cm top border and both cut inaccurately.
I tried talking to Cricut and the response was more or less ‘Oh dear’ so I’ve bastardised my mat by trimming 3mm off of the left side of the sticky bed, plus I position my card 7mm lower - works perfectly BUT I should NOT have had to do this!
I believe it’s a software problem and it needs sorting - cards are too expensive to waste like this.

  10. What if it’s cutting too far right? The image is more to the right than center on the card. That seems to be my problem right now.

  11. I’m having same problem even though mat border at top is correct. Have wasted so much card. Could it be because I’m using my iPad for Cricut apps

  15. Same issue here using the Cricut Maker with the desktop app. My card mat has the correct top margin measurement. I did notice that this issue started after I did a Print then cut calibration, but I can't figure out how to undo that to see if that is the cause.
